Favourite record of 2011 - Thee Cormans Halowe’en Record w/Sound Effects.

We seem to be on a bit of a budget rock bonanza here at Trash City, and why the hell not. I first heard of Thee Cormans while browsing through MySpace (remember that!?) a few years ago and their whole deal grabbed me immediately.. super-schlocky outlaw biker surf trash played by dudes in masks.

The Creature’s(guitar) mask really blew my lid cuz I remember having the piss scared out of me by a clip of Roger Corman’s ‘The Creature from the Haunted Sea’ that was in a documentary about Jaws (which also scared various things out of me).

So anyway I bought their first self published 45 and it fast became one of my favourites, but the lads didn’t seem to be heading towards recording any more stuff as far as I could tell which was a bummer.

As you can probably guess, I was extremely excited when I heard that In The Red Records would be putting out their debut LP and a new 45 too.

The record is recorded in super-lo-fi, Thee Cormans truly keep up with the ‘no expenses spent’ aesthetic of their influences. It’s kinda divided up between reverb drenched surf-trash and fuzzed out tuff dood biker soundtrack instros, with nods to dudes like Link Wray, Davie Allan and Dick Dale.

These guys blow most modern surf bands out of the water, while most surf bands are so concerned about having the right equipment and playing note perfect ripoffs of surf standards, Thee Cormans just don’t care. They don’t care what anyone else does, says, or thinks about surf music and that comes across pretty strong in the record.

The icing on the cake of this record are the terrifying sound effects added by In The Red head honcho Larry Hardy. I don’t know what kinda creep that guy is but jeeeeeeeeheezus. You gotta hear it to believe it.

Check it out for yourself and it will become your new favourite record.
